Buyer's Guide

Which barrel sauna built in Canada should you buy?

Start with the makers who build near you, because delivery and assembly vary more than the wood. We compared ten Canadian barrel makers from BC to Quebec.

Buy the barrel built closest to you. In BC that's Nootka, whose 8 ft electric barrel suits most households and which its own crew assembles around Vancouver. In Alberta, Copperwood or one of the two Calgary shops will deliver for little or nothing, LeisureCraft and True North cover Ontario, and SaunaSpa trucks assembled barrels across Quebec. Ten Canadian makers build barrels, and once you've picked a length, freight and assembly change the bill more than the cedar does.

Ten Canadian barrel makers side by side

We've put one model per maker in the table. Read the last column closely, because a kit waiting at a freight depot and a barrel assembled in your yard are very different purchases.

Prices from each maker's Canadian store, and from Backyard Canada for LeisureCraft, read Oct 10, 2026, before freight and tax; Northern Lights' range is a sale price. Seats are each maker's rating for an electric heater.

How long a barrel do you need?

Count the people who'll sit in it on a busy night, then think about the heater, since we've seen it change the answer. Most makers rate an 8 ft barrel for four to six and a 10 ft for six to eight, and LeisureCraft seats four even in its shortest barrel, about 2 m long.

The heater changes the math. A wall-mounted electric heater stays out of the way, while a wood stove stands on the floor in front of the back bench. Nootka rates its 8 ft barrel for four with electric heat and two with its wood stove, so if you're set on wood, we'd buy one size longer than the seat count suggests.

Look for thick walls and good bands

A barrel is a ring of cedar staves held tight by metal bands, and the staves swell after a few rains to close the joints, Nootka says. Most Canadian makers use walls 1.5 in (38 mm) thick. SaunaSpa's standard Classic walls are thinner, and it charges $1,000 to $1,500 extra for the thicker boards.

Bands come in aluminum or stainless. LeisureCraft says its marine-grade aluminum bands are made in Canada, and Forest Cooperage uses stainless. Whatever the metal, plan to snug them up seasonally for the first year or two, which Nootka's care guide asks owners to do.

A metal roof keeps rain and snow off the top staves. Nootka sells one as an option and says it speeds heat-up by about a fifth, because the roof holds warmth in.

Ask how high the top bench sits

Sauna builders have a rule of thumb they call the law of löyly: your feet should be at or above the top of the stones. SaunaTimes explains it for full-size rooms, and it's worth checking in a barrel, where the curved roof limits how high a bench can go. Below the stones, the air at your feet stays cool while your head cooks.

Few Canadian makers publish bench heights, so ask for the measurement from the floor to the bench and from the floor to the top of the stones. A heater mounted high on the wall, or a tall stove, puts the stones above bench level and your feet below them. Upgraded or raised benches, which some makers sell, fix that.

Wood stove or electric heater in a barrel

An electric heater is the easier choice. It heats a barrel fast, Nootka quotes 10 to 15 minutes to 90°C (194°F), and it runs from a thermostat or an app. Nootka's heaters need a 240V circuit on a 40- or 50-amp breaker, wired by an electrician with a permit, and other makers' run on similar circuits.

A wood stove suits a cottage or a lot without power. It's slower, Nootka says closer to 45 minutes, and the chimney kit, the install and any permit are usually yours to sort out. Insurers often ask for a WETT inspection, and Bunkie Life tells buyers to have a WETT-certified technician fit the flue.

BC and Alberta have the most barrel makers

Nootka in Squamish is our pick for most of BC. Its crew builds the barrel in your yard around Vancouver and the Sea to Sky, and its 8 ft model with a Canadian-built heater lands a little under $9,000. Forest Cooperage, over on Vancouver Island, coopers its barrels from clear cedar for roughly double that, and an order can take up to three months.

Alberta has three makers within an hour of each other. Copperwood in Spruce Grove offers a Homecraft heater from BC and free pickup at its shop. Bramari's Calgary barrel comes with its heater, a Harvia or a HUUM, already priced in, and BnB Barrels, also in Calgary, delivers and assembles free in both big cities. Neither Calgary shop traces its Selkirk cedar to a forest.

Where to buy

Ontario buyers choose between two kits and a stove-ready barrel

LeisureCraft's Harmony is the Ontario barrel we'd buy, built in Melancthon from Ontario white cedar with aluminum bands the company says are made in Canada. It comes as a kit through a dealer, and the Serenity and Tranquility stretch the same build for five and six.

True North's barrel from Owen Sound costs about $2,000 less as a kit you collect from a freight depot, and its policy gives a two-year warranty. Bunkie Life's pine barrel ships with a Harvia wood stove in the crate, which suits a cottage lot.

Where to buy

Quebec and Manitoba each have one maker to know

SaunaSpa builds in Saint-Chrysostome, south of Montréal, and delivers its barrels fully assembled, mostly to Quebec and Ontario buyers. Its 5 ft model is the cheapest Canadian barrel we've found, though the cedar's origin goes unstated and we'd pay for the thicker walls.

Northern Lights, a Manitoba family firm, sells a clear-cedar barrel and puts a Saunacore heater, made in Toronto, in its price, which makes it close to all-Canadian. It ships anywhere in the country, assembled or as a kit, though its site doesn't name the town where it builds, and even on sale it costs more than any other barrel here except Forest Cooperage's.

Where to buy

A barrel needs a level pad, a permit check and a path in

Most barrels sit on their own cradles, so they need a level base and no concrete. Gravel, pavers or a deck all work, according to Nootka, which suggests pavers under the cradles if you set one on grass. An 8 ft barrel weighs about 660 kg (1,450 lb), Nootka says, so check a deck's load rating first.

Small outbuildings often skip a building permit, while the electrical hookup usually needs its own. Ask your municipality before you order. Then walk the route from the road to the pad, because a built barrel needs a truck or a crane to reach it, and a kit only needs two people and a clear path.

How did we choose these barrels?

We only list barrels whose makers say on their own sites that they build in Canada, and every product page carries that link and the day we read it. For this guide we read the makers' product pages, FAQs, configurators and shipping terms on Oct 10, 2026, and priced LeisureCraft from Backyard Canada. Our method page sets out the sorting, and cabins, cubes and infrared rooms sit alongside the barrels in the best saunas made in Canada.

Common questions

What's the best barrel sauna made in Canada?
For most households we'd pick Nootka's 8 ft barrel. Nootka makes it in Squamish, BC, out of western red cedar milled nearby, seats four in it with an electric heater, and charges $8,900 with that heater.
How much does a barrel sauna cost in Canada?
A barrel sauna built in Canada costs about $4,400 to $19,500, before freight and tax. SaunaSpa's 5 ft Classic starts at $4,399 without a heater, and Forest Cooperage's coopered clear-cedar barrel tops the range.
How many people fit in an 8 ft barrel sauna?
Canadian makers rate an 8 ft barrel sauna for four to six people with an electric heater. Nootka rates its 8 ft barrel for four, or two with a wood stove, because the stove stands on the floor.
Does a barrel sauna need a foundation?
No. A barrel sauna sits on its own cradles and needs a level base such as gravel, pavers or a deck, according to Nootka. Check that a deck can carry the weight, since an 8 ft barrel weighs about 660 kg (1,450 lb).
